Tasting note

Dark cherry and pomegranate over wet slate, then dried rose and a savoury, almost saline edge. The tannins feel like fine gravel. It is closed now and will stay that way into 2027; after that it has a decade in it.

At the tableVenison loin; mushroom risotto; patience.

In the vineyard

Die Kloof, the ravine. One hectare at 380 metres on the steepest slope on the farm, facing south-east into the prevailing wind. Planted in 2009 to clones 777 and 115.

The vintage

A cool, late spring and a dry, windy summer. Yields fell by a quarter: small berries, thick skins, very little juice. Picked on 17 February 2022, between 06:40 and 10:15.

In the cellar

40% whole bunch, wild fermented in open concrete. Sixteen months in 228 litre French oak, 30% new. Not fined, not filtered.
